Sylvester McCoy, a beloved Scottish character actor best known as the seventh incarnation of TV’s Doctor Who and for his role in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit movies, joins Bleak December’s new offering – a full-cast and lushly-scored audio adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story, The Signalman. Mr. McCoy (who has enjoyed a long and successful career as a variety performer and actor on stage, TV and in film) portrays the titular character, who is haunted by a mysterious presence whose appearances forewarn of impending tragedy.
On his becoming The Signalman for Bleak December, Sylvester shares:
“The reason why I wanted to do this is… well firstly – Charles Dickens, who is one of the great writers, and who in many ways told my story, because I was an orphan boy. Oliver Twist I associated with, also other characters in his tales… When I was a child, I used to sit in front of an open fire watching black and white television, and there was a great program on called Tall Story Club – and there they sat around and told ghost stories, and I loved it! And it’s just such a privilege to be able to sit here, and in my imagination hear the crackle of the fire, and tell my ghost story to you…”
